Chapter 27

The driveway seemed longer than I remembered as we rumbled along. Adrenaline rushed through me, a combination of anger and fear. I gripped the armrest, trying to control the trembling of my hands.

I moved closer to the passenger door, gauging whether I could jump, and if I did what would happen?

Best case, I’d get away and the two men would give up and leave us alone. Yeah, and I’d find a pet unicorn and a pot of gold in the woods.

More likely one of them would go back for Karen while the other one chased me. I craned my head to look over my shoulder at Donny in the bed of the pickup. Sure enough, he was perched on the side and looked like he was ready to leap out at any moment.

Bad idea.

“Just sit tight,” Calvin said. “Couple minutes, you do what we asked and we’re gone, you’re back in your fancy car, and your friend’s come home to meet you.”

He glanced over at me and I caught something in his eyes. An intellect that didn’t quite fit with the rest of him, perhaps. It disappeared so quickly I wasn’t sure if it was real or my imagination. I couldn’t trust that my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me.

We rounded a curve, and I saw the mailbox about ten yards ahead. Calvin stopped the truck and motioned for me to get out. “Just wait there,” he said, once I was on the ground.

Donny hopped out of the back and reached for the phone. He stood on the running board, the phone in one hand, the other arm wrapped around the open window frame. He stared at me as the truck pulled slowly down the driveway, a warning not to move.

The truck stopped at the end of the driveway and Donny jumped down. He shoved the phone in the mailbox and ran back to the truck. As soon as the door closed, Calvin gunned the engine.

It coughed once as gas flooded in, then the engine roared, the tires grabbed, and the truck fishtailed onto the dirt road in a cloud of dust.

I immediately ran to the mailbox, grabbed Karen’s phone, and headed back toward the cabin at a dead run.

Karen had turned around and come down the driveway to meet me. I threw myself into the passenger side and returned her phone.

I panted, trying to get my breath after the headlong rush back down the driveway. “What was that?” I shouted. “Who was that?”

Fear bubbled to the surface and I let loose with a string of curses that would have made Bluebeard proud.

Karen stopped the car and stared at me. “Glory?”

“Sorry,” I whispered, still trembling. “I just . . .” I tried to laugh, but it came out more like a little sob. “I think Bluebeard might be a bad influence.”

Karen punched buttons on her phone, muttering to herself. After several seconds, she gave a triumphant shout. “Got it!”

“Got what?” I asked. I had seen Calvin’s reaction to the contents of her phone.
